Innovation Design Sprints
Design · Strategy · UX · Research · Innovation
Overview
The Innovation Sprint is a six-week, highly iterative, academically-rigorous, co-designed program.
Innovation Sprints involve a team of QUT researchers, designers, and client stakeholders who rapidly ideate to explore opportunities to a specific problem, through ‘problem divergence’ and then quickly into ‘concept convergence’ to successfully develop a prototype and actionable framework for change. The solution is presented to a forum of stakeholders with on-going engagement with domain experts throughout the process.
Approach
Conducted in the Innovation Labs at QUT Gardens Point campus, an Innovation Sprint takes 30 business days scheduled as three 10-day blocks to:
research and consult, ideate and develop solutions, andreport on outcomes.
- research and consult,
- ideate and develop solutions, and
- report on outcomes.
Due to client confidentiality agreements samples of recent work can not be displayed, however the below outlines some of the territories covered and tasks performed.
Future of Money, ASX Top 20 Financial Institution
Outcomes
Facilitated the exploration of the future of money over a six-week innovation sprint, identifying a future multi-billion dollar global industry. Solution included a platform and product design (MVP), executive pitch, business case, execution strategy, horizon forecast, operating model and other analyses.
- Mapped opportunity ecosystem and generated a business model, vision of purpose helping create clarity and consensus for strategic planning and execution.
- Designed and facilitated small workshops with various stakeholders (internal staff, subject matter experts, external parties, potential clients) to evaluate organisational capability and inform execution strategy, reducing time to market and generating significant cost savings.
- Undertook a strategic review of the industry’s competitive landscape, identifying a new strategic focus and untapped market, offering the ability for first-mover advantage and unique market positioning.
- Oversaw the development of a financial model and execution stragey, to bring the identified opportunity to market within 6 months, with expected NPV within 18 months of launch.
- Designed interoperatable product and service offerings, gaining desirability validation from potential customers.
- Led the analysis and application of Artificial Intelligence to identified opportunity, determining AI applications, dependencies and governance considerations, providing critical insight and clarity to the innovation, design and execution strategy.
- Presented solution and strategy to the organisations executive stakeholders and to the wider organisation.
Digital Service Transformation (x3), State Government Department
Outcomes
Led facilitation of three eight-week innovation and process transformation sprints exploring the future service delivery models for three multi-billion dollar business lines.
- Designed and facilitated design thinking workshops for each business line, to identify opportunities of sprint focus. Workshop participants included internal and external government stakeholders, content matter experts, industry and customers to diversify the collaboration.
- Completed end-to-end user journey mapping, identifying numerous pain points and opportunities, leading to substantial service improvements.
- Led analysis of advanced technology implications (such as artificial intelligence and blockchain) to revenue base and service models, identifying several areas for application, leading to significant operational gains and efficiencies.
- Completed capability analysis (talent, capital, resources) to identify dependencies and opportunities to inform execution roadmap and strategy.
- Identified and generated new service model designs, including substantial changes to user experience reducing friction points and offering a more intuitive service, providing both financial and time savings to each stakeholder.
- Engaged internal, industry and external stakeholders to identify collaborative opportunities, gain insights and validate identified solutions.
- Presented solutions and strategy to the organisations executive stakeholders and to the wider organisation.
